The Great Crypto Heist: $11 Million Worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum Stolen

On Saturday night in San Francisco, a $11 million cryptocurrency theft targeted the residence of a tech investor who had previously dated ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman. The Post received confirmation of the occurrence from police sources and individuals acquainted with their previous relationship. When the armed robber buzzed the $4.4 million Dorland Street address, he pretended to be a delivery person.
Tech Investor Tied Up as $11M in Crypto Is Stolen
Doorbell camera footage shared on social media showed him carrying a white box. The guy claims to work for a UPS affiliate and asks for “Joshua,” feigning to have a box for him. When the victim answers the door, he introduces himself as Joshua. After getting the resident to sign for the parcel, the robber searches his pocket and asks if he may borrow a pen. A loud bang is heard as the suspect follows the resident inside.
After entering the house, the suspect tied the resident up with duct tape and pulled a revolver on him. According to police sources, he then emptied the victim’s cryptocurrency accounts and took their laptop and phone. The victim had minor injuries, including bruises, when police arrived around 6:45 PM. Ethereum and Bitcoin valued at $11 million were taken by the shooter. According to a person with knowledge of the inquiry, the heist is thought to have been a targeted hit by an organized crime group.
Altman’s Ex Is a Serial Startup Whiz
Lachy Groom, a 31-year-old homeowner, is a venture capitalist and the ex-boyfriend of 40-year-old Sam Altman of OpenAI. Groom became well-known in his home country of Australia as a startup whiz after founding four businesses and selling three of them before turning eighteen, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Later, he became well-known as a member of “The Stripe Mafia,” a group of fourteen former workers of an online payment processing company who went on to launch their own venture-backed businesses.
According to property records, Groom paid $1.8 million to purchase property from Altman’s brother in 2021. Their relationship’s specifics have never been made public. Joshua, a fellow tech investor, and Groom share the four-bedroom house on Dorland Street, according to information obtained by The Post.
