Czech Opposition Demands Transparency on Bitcoin Auction

Czech Opposition– The Czech Republic’s main opposition party, ANO, has announced plans to submit a no-confidence motion against the government, citing concerns over a $45 million Bitcoin transaction linked to a convicted criminal. The motion is scheduled for Tuesday following accusations of corruption.

On May 28, the Czech Justice Ministry auctioned nearly 500 Bitcoins (worth around $45 million) after receiving the cryptocurrency from Tomas Jirikovsky. Jirikovsky, convicted in 2017 of embezzlement, drug trafficking, and weapons violations, had acquired the Bitcoins through an online black market.

ANO’s vice chair, Alena Schillerova, stated, “There is no choice but to submit the no-confidence motion,” and demanded a thorough investigation into the sale. The party is pressing for clarity on whether the Bitcoin’s origin was properly vetted and who authorized the transaction. Additionally, concerns arose as some auction winners reportedly want their funds refunded, questioning how any losses will be compensated.

Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blazek resigned on May 30 amid growing criticism, denying any wrongdoing. He stated his resignation was to protect the government’s image ahead of October elections. Eva Decroix was appointed as the new justice minister and pledged an independent investigation, affirming, “The Ministry of Justice will provide cooperation in the investigation of the donation case.”
