Credit Saison Expands into Blockchain Finance with Onigiri Capital
Credit Saison, Japan’s third-largest credit card issuer, is taking a bold step into the blockchain space with the launch of Onigiri Capital, a $50 million investment vehicle focused on startups building real-world asset (RWA) applications.
Bridging U.S. Blockchain Innovation With Asian Markets
Operated by its venture arm, Saison Capital, Onigiri Capital has already secured most of its target funding from internal and external investors, raising approximately $35 million so far. The fund aims to support early-stage startups developing payment solutions, tokenization projects, stablecoins, decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, and other economic infrastructure. A central goal is to connect U.S. founders and developers with Asian financial markets, including Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
“Asia is increasingly central to blockchain finance,” fund managers said, emphasizing that many U.S. startups lack access to regulatory expertise and local networks. Onigiri Capital aims to fill this gap by providing capital, regulatory guidance, and access to established distribution channels, helping startups expand internationally.
Strategic Timing Amid Market Challenges
The launch comes during a period of uncertainty in crypto venture funding, affected by rising interest rates and fallout from major events such as the FTX collapse. Despite these headwinds, investor interest in financial services, DeFi projects, and real-world asset applications remains resilient, underscoring the long-term potential of this sector.
Credit Saison: A Financial Powerhouse Expands Into Blockchain
Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (8253.T), Credit Saison operates across financial services, real estate, and entertainment, with a strong credit card business. Its stock recently traded at ¥3,913 ($26.6), within a 52-week range of ¥2,781 ($18.9) to ¥4,269 ($28.9).
With Onigiri Capital, Credit Saison is not just investing in blockchain—it’s strategically positioning itself as a bridge between U.S. innovation and Asia’s dynamic markets, signaling confidence in the continued growth of RWA-focused blockchain ventures.
