Ripple Official Highlights Urgency for U.S. Crypto Clarity

As Washington debates the future of digital assets, Ripple’s Chief Legal Officer Stuart Alderoty is calling on lawmakers to “finish the job on crypto clarity,” arguing that the U.S. has a shrinking window to set the rules before innovation moves offshore.

SEC Puts Crypto Clarity on the Agenda

In a new op-ed published on RealClearMarkets, Alderoty noted that, for the first time, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has included crypto regulation among its top priorities. He sees this as a signal that “the time has come” for structured and predictable oversight.

“The absence of clear, consistent rules doesn’t make crypto go away,”
Alderoty wrote.
“It just pushes innovation to jurisdictions that are moving faster.”

Polls Show Strong Public Support for Regulation

Alderoty, who also serves as president of the newly formed National Cryptocurrency Association (NCA), backed his call with recent data:

CoinTR
  • Harris Poll survey found that 1 in 5 U.S. adults owns crypto.
  • Pew Research reports that a majority of Americans lack trust in current crypto systems.
  • YouGov poll shows that more Americans support tighter regulation than looser rules.

Meanwhile, Chainalysis estimates that Americans transacted over $1 trillion in digital assets in 2024 alone — spanning savings, payments, and more.

A Critical Moment for U.S. Leadership

Alderoty positioned the upcoming fall session in Congress as pivotal. With stablecoin legislation already on the books, broader market structure laws could follow.

“The opportunity is in front of us. The mandate is already there,”
he wrote.
Lawmakers, he argued, can now “prove to Americans that Washington can, in fact, deliver clarity where it’s needed most.”

The piece concluded with a strong message: regulatory clarity won’t just protect consumers — it will help ensure that financial innovation stays in the U.S.
