Cynthia Lummis to Step Away From Washington After Championing Crypto Legislation

Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming has confirmed she will not seek re-election, setting the stage for a major shift in the US crypto and tech policy landscape. In a statement released Friday, Lummis said she plans to retire when her term ends in early 2027, citing the intense workload in Washington and a realization that another six-year term no longer matches her energy level.

A Key Crypto Advocate Steps Away

Lummis, who entered the Senate in 2020 after years in the House of Representatives, has become one of the most influential voices for cryptocurrency, technology, and artificial intelligence regulation in Congress. Serving on the Senate Banking Committee, she consistently pushed for a lighter federal approach to digital assets and was widely viewed as crypto’s strongest ally on Capitol Hill.

Describing herself as a “sprinter in a marathon,” Lummis said the grueling fall session and shutdown fight forced a change of heart about continuing in office. Despite her decision, her seat is considered safely Republican, meaning her departure is unlikely to shift party control.

Tech, AI, and Fiscal Conservatism

Beyond crypto, Lummis played a role in early discussions around AI oversight. This year, she introduced legislation aimed at protecting AI companies from certain liability cases, provided they met specific disclosure requirements. She also maintained a firm conservative stance on federal spending, frequently advocating for budget cuts.

Lummis recently raised concerns about a private meeting between President Trump and investors tied to his $TRUMP meme token, joining other GOP senators in seeking more clarity within the party.

Who Could Replace Lummis?

With the seat opening up, Wyoming Republicans are already preparing for a crowded primary. Sources indicate Rep. Harriet Hageman, who defeated Liz Cheney in 2022, is likely to run, with an announcement expected soon. Given Wyoming’s deep-red voting history, the GOP primary winner is almost certain to secure the Senate seat.

As Lummis exits, her legacy as a trailblazer for digital currency, energy policy, and Western-state interests leaves a lasting imprint on US tech legislation.
