DeFi Education Fund Expands Mission With Launch of Charitable Crypto Foundation

DeFi Education Fund (DEF) has officially launched the DeFi Education Foundation, a newly formed 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on furthering its mission to educate lawmakers, protect blockchain developers, and promote sound DeFi policy. The announcement came in a press release dated August 13, signaling a new phase in the organization’s crypto lobbying efforts.

A New Avenue for Tax-Efficient Crypto Donations

One of the key benefits of the foundation’s launch is the introduction of tax-advantaged crypto donations. According to DEF, making in-kind cryptocurrency contributions to the new nonprofit may allow donors to support the cause in a more tax-efficient manner. The organization stated that this move will be a “net-positive for many DEF donors,” offering not just impact, but also charitable giving incentives.

Strengthening the DeFi Mission

The foundation will continue the parent organization’s mission to support decentralized finance (DeFi) on the policy and legislative fronts. “We are thrilled to announce the launch of the DeFi Education Foundation,” the press release states, emphasizing that while the core advocacy goals remain unchanged, the foundation introduces “new benefits for our supporters.”

Responding to Regulatory Uncertainty

The launch comes amid ongoing efforts by DEF and its allies, including a16z, to push the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) toward establishing a “safe harbor” for blockchain applications. DEF warns that current SEC policies could misclassify blockchain developers as brokers, potentially requiring them to register and comply with burdensome regulations.

According to DEF’s recent blog post, such measures would “undermine the benefits of blockchain systems” and force developers into roles they were never meant to fill, such as custodians or intermediaries.

A Dual Strategy for DeFi’s Future

With the DeFi Education Foundation, DEF doubles down on its advocacy for crypto innovation while providing a strategic vehicle for donors to contribute to the cause—both effectively and efficiently.
