Czech Police Arrest Drug Trafficker Linked to $45M Bitcoin Donation Scandal
Czech authorities have arrested Tomas Jirikovsky, a convicted drug trafficker, in connection with a $45 million Bitcoin donation to the Ministry of Justice. The donation, which raised major political concerns, has sparked an ongoing investigation into money laundering and further criminal activities.
The Controversial Bitcoin Donation
In early 2025, former Justice Minister Pavel Blazek accepted 468 Bitcoin—valued at $45 million—without verifying its origin. Later, it was revealed that the cryptocurrency was linked to Jirikovsky, who has a history of drug trafficking and darknet operations. Following this revelation, Blazek resigned in May. An internal audit by current Justice Minister Eva Decroix confirmed the donation posed high risks and should never have been accepted.
Political Fallout and Ongoing Investigation
The scandal severely impacted Czech politics. Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s coalition narrowly survived a no-confidence vote amid growing opposition pressure. The opposition party continues to demand resignations, including that of the Finance Minister. Meanwhile, prosecutors are withholding further details to protect the integrity of the ongoing case.
Challenges in Regulating Cryptocurrency Donations
This case highlights the difficulties governments face in handling cryptocurrency transactions, especially those involving questionable sources. It raises critical questions about the adequacy of due diligence and verification processes within public institutions. The investigation continues as Czech authorities work to strengthen oversight and regain public trust.
