In order to create a World ID by scanning their irises and establishing their identity online, people are encouraged by the Worldcoin project, which launched on July 24. Many cities around the world, mostly in the Global South, have had orbs installed in them.

The operational challenges are obviously huge (when) you think about what it takes to get these orbs manufactured. The other (challenge) is, of course, overcoming that kind of biometrics resistance — for lack of a better word — that some people feel when they first hear about the product. But again, both of those I think are trending well.

Alex Blania Talks About Challenges After Launch

On the same panel, Worldcoin co-founder Alex Blania stated that when the project went live, speaking with authorities and officials throughout the world took on increased importance. Blania noted that the team is scaling while talking to more policymakers and then ramping back up.

We had a really crazy, crazy surge in the weeks after launch. The craziest thing for us was that there were long, long lines of people waiting to set up pretty much everywhere. And that was really hard to manage.

Since well before the project’s debut, privacy concerns have followed it, but Worldcoin doesn’t save the data after the iris scan is complete, according to Blania.

Your data is deleted. You actually stay completely anonymous, which is a very, very powerful thing, given I do believe that we have to figure this out globally — some kind of verification mechanism on the Internet. And I think World ID is a chance to do that in a really, truly privacy-preserving way.
