Vitalik Buterin Advocates for Privacy with Regular Railgun Transfers

Crypto News- Vitalik Buterin’s ongoing transfers to Railgun underscore his belief in privacy as a fundamental right. In response to the attention his actions garner, Buterin has emphasized that “privacy is normal.” He acknowledges the potential misuse of privacy-focused protocols but insists that tools like Railgun are designed to protect legitimate users.

“Railgun utilizes the privacy pools protocol, making it much harder for bad actors to infiltrate without compromising user privacy,” Buterin explained. Alan Scott, a researcher at Railgun, elaborated in a recent BeInCrypto interview that Railgun employs zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs) to maintain user privacy in DeFi applications. One of Railgun’s key features is Private Proofs of Innocence, which allow users to demonstrate they have not interacted with malicious actors on-chain.

Technological Safeguards Against Malicious Actors

This technology prevents users from sharing a system with nefarious addresses. Furthermore, Railgun offers “auditability” features, including a view-only private key, allowing users to disclose their transaction history to third parties.

Despite its advanced technology, Railgun has reportedly been used by the Lazarus Group, a hacker organization allegedly linked to the North Korean government. According to a January 2023 report by Elliptic, the Lazarus Group turned to Railgun after the US Treasury sanctioned Tornado Cash, their previous money-laundering tool.

Lazarus Group’s Criminal Exploits

The Lazarus Group had used Tornado Cash to hide their June 2022 theft of over $100 million from the Harmony Horizon Bridge. The FBI confirmed that the group laundered over $60 million of Ethereum from this theft through Railgun.

Vitalik Buterin’s endorsement of Railgun, alongside its exploitation by the Lazarus Group, highlights the ongoing tension between safeguarding individual privacy and preventing criminal activity in the crypto industry.
