Tornado Cash Developer Alexey Pertsev Appeals $2.2 Billion Money Laundering Conviction

Crypto News– Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev has filed an appeal after being found guilty in a Dutch court on Tuesday.

A spokesperson from the s-Hertogenbosch Court of Appeal confirmed that they have received notification of Pertsev’s appeal filing. The appeal must be approved, and the court where Pertsev was originally tried will need to prepare the case file for the Court of Appeal. According to the spokesperson, it could take several months to prepare for the first hearing.

Newly appointed judges

The appeal will be reviewed by a new panel of three judges. If the appeal is approved, Pertsev’s defense team will have the opportunity to present additional arguments and request further investigations.

Pertsev’s defense lawyer was not immediately available for comment.

Legal experts have indicated to DL News that the court’s verdict has certain weaknesses, which provide a strong basis for an appeal.

Previously, a panel of three judges found Pertsev guilty of money laundering charges, sentencing him to 64 months in prison.

The court ruled that Tornado Cash is an illicit platform, stating that it has no mechanisms to prevent criminal users from exploiting it.

If the defendant had wanted the ability to take action against abuse, then he should have built it in. But he did not, read Pertsev’s verdict.

Tornado Cash is a decentralized application that allows users to anonymize crypto transactions on the Ethereum blockchain. Advocates argue that it serves as a privacy solution, protecting users’ transaction histories from public scrutiny.
