Almost falling under the category of celebrity meme coins, the token was introduced in June by Taylor Armstrong, star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
The image of Armstrong is taken from a Real Housewives episode in which she is arguing with a fellow cast member about gossip about her ex-husband, who killed himself due to accusations of abuse. Armstrong reportedly now promotes domestic violence programs by using the token and the meme.
From Tragedy to Token: How Peanut the Squirrel Inspired a Billion-Dollar Memecoin?
The token, called Peanut the Squirrel (PNUT), is in honor of the same-named squirrel that was put down on November 1 by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) in order to test it for rabies after it bit an investigator. Despite being wild, the squirrel had built a social media following after being taken in by amateur porn artist Mark Longo in 2017.
Following Peanut’s seizure in October and subsequent euthanasia to test positive for rabies after biting an NYSDEC official, there was an online uproar. Nov. 1 was PNUT’s inception date, and on Nov. 14, it reached its peak market value of $2.27 billion. Since then, its value has dropped to less than $650 million.
