Sui Blockchain’s Vision – Evan Cheng, the co-founder and CEO of Mysten Labs, the company behind the Sui blockchain, recently shared insights at the Mainnet conference about the forthcoming SuiPlay0X1 handheld gaming device and his vision for the blockchain’s future.

SuiPlay0X1: A Software Play, Not Just Hardware

Cheng emphasized that the SuiPlay0X1 is fundamentally a “software play” rather than merely a hardware device, highlighting the importance of “disruptive developers” as one of Sui’s key assets. This perspective reflects Cheng’s belief that the gaming device will leverage deep software and operating system integration to provide a superior user experience.

“It’s a gaming device that can play all the Windows games,” Cheng stated. “What makes it better than other devices? The deep software integration. Even serving the existing web3 gamer, it’s a superior product because of the software.”

The Potential of Blockchain Gaming

Cheng noted that while some gamers have historically resisted web3 integrations, the right game can effectively demonstrate the advantages of blockchain technology. He explained the essential benefits that blockchain offers to gamers, including convenience, item provenance, authenticity, and anti-cheat measures.

“You have to understand what blockchain offers: a lot of these properties allow you to accomplish what you’re trying to accomplish much more easily,” he said, adding that blockchain can help turn a player’s imagination into a tangible product or experience.

Partnerships and Industry Diversity

Sui is not just focusing on gaming; Cheng revealed that the company is seeking diverse partnerships, having already engaged with significant players like ByteDance and MoviePass. Cheng stressed the importance of finding partners with a similar mindset, regardless of the specific industry.

“We’re pretty much in everything, talking to everybody,” he noted. “We’re seeking the like-minded partner that wants to do something better and different and challenges the status quo.”

A Unique Position in the Market

As a relatively new Layer 1 blockchain project, Cheng expressed confidence in Sui’s decision to build its own platform and community, rather than joining existing ecosystems like Optimism’s Superchain. He believes that the blockchain space has the potential to grow exponentially.

“We do believe this space will go 10x, 100x… we believe we have an authentic voice, and we’re going to stick with it,” Cheng said. “The way we win is not just about taking market share from an existing player; we want to grow the pie.”
