Founded in Paris by former researchers from Meta and Google AI, Mistral AI has emerged as a formidable player in the AI sector. The completion of its substantial funding round propels the company into a competitive position against heavyweights such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. The funding round, concluded on December 11, raised an impressive €385 million, equivalent to $414.41 million at the time of this writing.

Notably, key venture capitalists, including Andreesen-Horowitz and LightSpeed Ventures, participated in this funding round. While Mistral AI opted to keep its current valuation confidential, an anonymous source hinted at the company’s present value hovering around $2 billion. This funding milestone underscores Mistral AI’s ascent in the AI industry and sets the stage for intensified competition with leading players in the field.

Could OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft Face a New Challenger’s Shadow?

The recent introduction of the AI model, Mistral 8x7B, has stirred significant interest within the AI industry, positioning itself as a noteworthy counterpart to prominent AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Against the backdrop of increased scrutiny faced by Microsoft’s OpenAI and Google’s Bard in light of the EU’s forthcoming AI law, Mistral AI has notably gained traction. Although currently in beta, the fully functional Mistral 8x7B model is anticipated to launch by early 2024.

With the successful conclusion of the recent funding round and the introduction of Mistral’s new AI model, the company is solidifying its position as a leading player in the AI industry.
