With the help of leading Mexican universities, Gear was able to expand its work and organize the first Latin American Web3 Universities Hackthon such as Fuel, Osis, Polkadot, YBB and UNAM, IPN, UAM, UPVM, ICEL, UABC, UP, Tec de Monterrey, ITAM, UACAM.
Web3 Hackathon in Latin America
The event took place on December 15-16 in Mexico. The event was one of the largest Hackathons ever held in Latin America with the participation of approximately 50 speakers and mentors. Many developers, university professors and Web3 professionals who wanted to share their knowledge with each other attended the event. This event, which is known as one of the biggest Hackthons held in Latin America, made a great impression. The Gear team believes that such events are necessary for the Web3 industry and plans to continue organizing such events in the coming years.
While the event reached more than 500 participants in total, many NFT works were exhibited. After the 2-day event, the Hackathon winners shared the 12 thousand dollar prize. The winners of the hackathon were “Decentralized Diary,” Tec de Monterrey with “Vote Chain,” UACAM with “SmartCube,” IPN ESCOM with “Decentralized Internet” and UPS with the “NFT ticket”.
There was also a special event at the Hackathon where many specially invited digital artists made pictures of different emotions such as love, trust, freedom and cats. These images were included in the Vara NFT collection created using the Gear protocol. The creations made by NFT artists were put on sale on December 17th and, all NFTs were sold out. The buyers not only got the NFTs,s but also got the originals. The proceeds of the NFT sales were given directly to the artists. Gear’s chief ecosystem officer, Pavel Salas, said:

The hackathon provided a unique opportunity for attendees to connect with experts in the field and learn about the latest technologies and trends in the Web3 industry. It was just the beginning. We expect to do the next one in six months with even more students from a wider number of universities and a bigger number of projects to collaborate with.”
