Following the Consensus 2023 event, which took place April 26-28, the CoinDesk editorial team convened. After the meeting, team members shared their views on the future of crypto.

Consensus 2023 Through the Eyes of the CoinDesk Editorial Team

On Twitter Spaces today, members of the CoinDesk editorial team gathered to discuss the key issues that will influence how the industry develops in the future and to assess the big picture at Consensus 2023.

Nick Baker’s Opinion

Nick Baker is deputy editor-in-chief of CoinDesk. He’s a newcomer to Consensus. Therefore, his opinion is very significant. For him, the event was huge and impressive. First of all, he thinks that people are optimistic about crypto.

Second, the traditional finance experts Baker is close to are still close to having a positive outlook on the future of cryptocurrencies and the migration of TradFi activities to crypto-compatible or adjacent infrastructure. Both of these inferences lead to a more positive view of Baker.

Ben Schiller’s Opinion

Ben Schiller is head of Consensus Magazine. One of the things that impressed Schiller the most about the event was a talk by Kate Brady, head of Web3 communications at PepsiCo. Although the company is not yet involved in the crypto industry, it is working to be part of Web3. However, according to Brady’s speeches, the company is blocked from entering Web3 due to a lack of regulatory clarity. These were the moments that impressed Schiller the most.

Nikhilesh De’s Opinion

Nikhilesh De is the managing editor of global policy and regulation at CoinDesk. According to De, the most impressive thing about the Congress is that everything discussed in the Congress is in line with the ongoing work in the judiciary. He thinks this will add urgency to the problems that need to be solved in the industry.

During the Congress, the crypto industry was seen working on a bill to prevent crime and other criminal activities. According to De, this means witnessing the development of the industry even while the conference is taking place.

Amitoj Singh’s Opinion

Amitoj Singh is a CoinDesk regulatory reporter. He asserts that his key takeaway relates to how non-American authorities view cryptocurrencies at a time when the United States is still experiencing gridlock in Congress and among regulators (the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodities Futures Trading Commission).

Other significant economies will not phrase it in a way that suggests they intend to profit from the impasse in the United States. But that is precisely what these non-U.S. jurisdictions are prepared for now that companies like Coinbase seem to be planning to move offshore.

Cheyenne Ligon’s Opinion

Cheyenne Ligon is a CoinDesk regulatory reporter. She thought the discussion on the turf battle between the CFTC and the SEC, which was moderated by Jesse Hamilton, was incredibly fascinating. Unsurprisingly, there was disagreement between the two former regulators, one from the CFTC and one from the SEC, over how to proceed in order to establish regulatory certainty for cryptocurrency. Former CFTC commissioner Brian Quintenz urged Congress to enact legislation, but former SEC attorney Dan Berkovitz said he did not believe that would make any difference.
