Ethereum Fusaka Upgrade to Solve Data Availability Issues with PeerDAS

The next Fusaka update, according to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, will enable nodes to confirm data availability without downloading all of the blockchain’s data. This enhancement will greatly increase scalability. The December upgrade will assist in resolving the present issues with data availability. Buterin clarified on Thursday that a key element known as PeerDAS (Peer Data Availability Sampling) will be used to do this.

PeerDAS is trying to do something pretty unprecedented: have a live blockchain that does not require any single node to download the full data. It as the key to L2 scaling, and eventually L1 scaling.

Ethereum Data Availability Breakthrough: PeerDAS Reaches New Heights

In January 2024, Ethereum Improvement Protocol 7594 introduced PeerDAS as a way to guarantee that blob data has been made public while downloading only a portion of the data.

Providing additional data availability helps bring scale to Ethereum users in the context of layer 2 systems called ‘rollups’ whose dominant bottleneck is layer 1 data availability,

Buterin’s remarks followed a post by Hildebert Moulié, Dragonfly’s head of data, who noted that the network had hit six blobs per block threshold for the first time on Wednesday. According to Moulié, Coinbase layer-2, Base, and Worldcoin are mostly responsible for the current surge in blob usage.

Buterin Warns: Ethereum’s Blob Capacity Increase Will Be Conservative at First

EIP-7594 will be introduced as part of the Fusaka upgrade on December 3, which will double the blob capacity from its current target/maximum of 6/9 per block. Buterin warned that even while the core developers have been working on this for years, they are prudent to exercise extreme caution when testing because this is completely new technology.

This is also why the blob count will increase conservatively at first, and then become more aggressive over time,
