Elon Musk’s X Sparks Controversy by Removing Bitcoin Emoji and Other Crypto Symbols
Elon Musk‘s social media platform X, is once again stirring up the cryptocurrency community by removing cryptocurrency emojis that had been in use for over four years.
The crypto community on X is baffled by the decision to delete several crypto emojis, including Bitcoin, from the social media platform.
According to multiple sources, X removed the Bitcoin hashtag emoji along with a few other crypto emojis on July 25.
The removal of crypto emojis on X is not limited to Bitcoin.
The cryptocurrency community has swiftly reacted to the news of the emoji removals, with many industry advocates expressing disappointment over the missing icons.
Some observers speculated that the removal of the Bitcoin emoji from X could negatively affect Bitcoin’s price. However, the removals were not exclusive to BTC.
Other coins like Crypto.com Coin and BNB have also seen their hashtags removed from X after being introduced in 2020.
As previously reported, X co-founder Jack Dorsey officially launched the Bitcoin emoji in February 2020. At that time, Bitcoin was trading at around $10,000, according to data from CoinGecko.
The emoji removals coincided with the Bitcoin 2024 conference.
The crypto community is particularly puzzled by the timing of the emoji removals on X, which occurred just as the Bitcoin 2024 conference kicked off in Nashville on July 25.
The conference will feature prominent speakers, including Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Trump, who has positioned himself as a pro-crypto candidate, is scheduled to speak at the conference on July 27.
Before the removal of cryptocurrency emojis from X, Musk added a dedicated emoji for the Trump-themed memecoin, MAGA (TRUMP), on July 18. The MAGA emoji has also been removed from X.
The emoji depicted the former president with his fist raised in the air following an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania in mid-July. Musk shared a photograph shortly after the incident and declared his full endorsement of Trump as a presidential candidate.
