Crypto News– Two prominent figures once hailed as titans in the cryptocurrency industry are facing vastly disparate prison sentences in the United States.

Since the sentencing proceedings for former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, questions have abounded both within and outside the crypto community regarding the divergent treatment by the U.S. legal system. Bankman-Fried could potentially spend his fifties behind bars, likely emerging with fewer assets compared to Zhao, who is set to leave prison by year’s end and boasts an estimated net worth of $33 billion, as reported by Forbes.

Bankman-Fried was apprehended in 2022, extradited to the United States, pleaded not guilty, placed under house arrest, detained in jail following allegations of witness tampering, underwent a six-week trial, was found guilty, and ultimately sentenced to 25 years in prison. In contrast, Zhao was indicted in 2023, entered a guilty plea, remained free on bail, received a four-month prison term, and is poised to surrender himself within days.

The former FTX CEO faced seven felony charges related to investor fraud and the improper use of customer funds, whereas CZ confronted a single charge linked to the failure to uphold an effective Anti-Money Laundering program at Binance.

CZ was accused of a crime more resembling a regulatory violation: the absence of adequate Anti-Money Laundering controls, whereas SBF was accused of wire fraud in connection to clandestinely diverting billions of dollars in crypto held with FTX to support Alameda, remarked Mark Bini, a former assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of New York, in conversation with Cointelegraph.

Throughout his legal troubles, Bankman-Fried and his defense team have consistently asserted that he acted in accordance with his beliefs of what was morally right. However, during the sentencing hearing, Judge Lewis Kaplan accused the former FTX CEO of being untruthful while testifying, labeling his statements as evasive. Following the judge’s imposition of a 25-year sentence, Bankman-Fried’s initial response in an interview was: I never believed that my actions were against the law.

During the trial, the presented facts of the case dealt a blow to Bankman-Fried’s defense. Numerous government witnesses, including his former girlfriend and Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison, suggested his involvement in orchestrating the improper use of FTX user funds.

In contrast, Zhao remained silent on the matter between U.S. authorities and Binance following a $4.3 billion settlement and his guilty plea in November 2023. Instead, he submitted extensive letters of support from industry leaders, family members, and others. Judge Richard Jones remarked on the overwhelming support for CZ during his sentencing hearing, noting that he had put [his] entire net worth at risk for Binance.

Despite speculation among many cryptocurrency users, it seems unlikely that CZ and SBF will be cellmates during their incarceration, let alone housed in the same facility. While the judge overseeing SBF’s case hinted at him serving time in a San Francisco Bay Area prison, there’s also the possibility that the former FTX CEO could remain in New York during his appeal process. As for Zhao, he is set to serve his four-month sentence at either the Camp at the Federal Correctional Institution Sheridan in Oregon or the Federal Detention Center SeaTac in Washington, with the reporting date yet to be determined.
