Expressing concern over potential breaches of the city’s Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, the Commissioner, Ada Chung, emphasized the need for individuals to safeguard their sensitive personal data and refrain from participating in activities involving the collection of such data, such as iris scanning.

Tools of Humanity, the company behind Worldcoin, has yet to respond to requests for comment from DL News.

Chung reiterated the obligation for all data users in Hong Kong to adhere to the requirements outlined in the PDPO and relevant Data Protection Principles concerning the collection, storage, processing, and use of personal data.

Millions of individuals globally have already enrolled in Worldcoin, a platform that mandates iris scanning to establish “proof of personhood,” confirming one’s unique identity.

Sam Altman, the CEO and founder of OpenAI, partnered with Alexander Blania to establish Worldcoin, presenting the project as a crucial tool for navigating a future where the lines between robots and humans blur in online interactions.

While some are drawn to Worldcoin for its promise of online verification, many are motivated by the prospect of receiving token allocations of the project’s WLD token.

Having debuted in Hong Kong in July, Worldcoin employs independent operators for verification, who are compensated in WLD tokens, similar to other regions.
