The Problem: Community Notes Aren’t Fast Enough

Community Notes is a feature on X that allows users to add explanatory context to posts that may be misleading. Once enough contributors deem a note helpful, it becomes visible to the public beneath the post. While this feature is valuable, Buterin pointed out a significant flaw: the delay in publishing these notes. This lag can result in users being misled before the necessary context is provided, a problem that Buterin believes needs urgent attention.

The Solution: Prediction Markets and AI

To combat this delay, Buterin suggested leveraging prediction markets—a type of open market where users can bet on specific outcomes. For example, on platforms like Polymarket, users bet on outcomes related to politics, sports, and cryptocurrency. Buterin envisions using this model to accelerate the Community Notes process.

Buterin explained that prediction markets could act as a catalyst, making existing mechanisms much faster. By integrating AI and prediction markets, the process of identifying posts that require Community Notes could be sped up significantly, Buterin stated.

How It Works: A Faster, Incentivized Process

Buterin’s idea is straightforward yet innovative. When a post is made on X, a question could immediately arise in a prediction market to determine if the post requires a Community Note. Large AI language models and bots could then participate in this market by betting small amounts of funds. The process would not only speed up the identification of misleading posts but also create an incentive structure for participants.
