Survey: Nearly 20% of Russians Have Used Cryptocurrency, While 66% Lack In-Depth Knowledge

According to a recent survey, nearly 20% of Russians have experimented with cryptocurrency, while around 66% are familiar with the concept but lack in-depth knowledge, Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported on Monday, September 30. The survey, conducted by a local financial marketplace, gathered data from 1,200 respondents aged 18 and above across the country, shedding light on the growing interest in digital assets among Russian consumers.

The findings reveal that just over 20% of respondents have had some experience with cryptocurrency, while nearly 80% have not yet ventured into the digital space. However, 15% expressed interest in adopting crypto in the future. Of those who have experimented with digital currencies, 63% cited curiosity as their main motivation, while 19% used it for savings or investment purposes. Only a small fraction, about 2%, reported using crypto regularly.

Despite increased awareness, the vast majority of respondents (nearly 90%) currently do not hold any cryptocurrency. Among the minority who do, 6% reported having less than 10% of their savings in crypto, with only 4% holding up to half of their assets in digital form.

Russia’s changing stance on cryptocurrency aligns with the government’s exploration of using digital assets in foreign trade, particularly in sectors with potential military applications. In mid-September, as reported by crypto.news, Russia formed a task group to address challenges faced by importers handling dual-use goods—products with both civilian and military applications, subject to stringent international payment restrictions. This came shortly after China’s August announcement of a ban on the export of unregulated civilian drones, which have seen growing use in military conflicts. The ban took effect on September 1.
