Strategic Bitcoin Reserve- US to Secure Bitcoin and Digital Assets in Major New Reserve

Strategic Bitcoin Reserve– US President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to create a “Strategic Bitcoin Reserve” and a “Digital Asset Stockpile,” both of which will initially include cryptocurrencies forfeited in criminal cases.

On March 7, White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks confirmed the signing of the order, stating, “The Reserve will be capitalized with Bitcoin owned by the federal government that was forfeited as part of criminal or civil asset forfeiture proceedings.” This order establishes the U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile alongside the Bitcoin reserve. The stockpile will primarily consist of cryptocurrencies, excluding Bitcoin, obtained via forfeiture.

The Bitcoin in this reserve will be treated as a store of value, rather than being sold. Sacks described it as “a digital Fort Knox for the cryptocurrency.” The reserve will initially be funded with Bitcoin owned by the Treasury Department, with other federal agencies set to assess their legal authority to contribute any Bitcoin they control. The Treasury and Commerce departments will explore strategies to buy more Bitcoin, but without increasing costs for U.S. taxpayers.

Trump’s March 3 Truth Social post also outlined plans for the reserve to potentially include other cryptocurrencies such as XRP, Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), along with Ether (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC), which would form the core of the reserve. However, according to Arkham Intelligence, the U.S. government does not hold any of these assets in its current crypto holdings.

Focused on Responsible Stewardship

Sacks further explained that the Digital Asset Stockpile aims to ensure responsible stewardship of the U.S. government’s digital assets. This includes considering the potential sale of cryptocurrencies in the stockpile, though no additional crypto purchases will be made outside of forfeiture. The Treasury Secretary will develop strategies for managing the stockpile effectively.

This development marks a significant shift in how the U.S. government plans to handle its growing digital asset holdings, with a focus on preserving value and exploring potential future use.
