Bitcoin and Volatility: Why It’s Acting More Like a Risky Tech Stock in Today’s Market
Bitcoin and Volatility – The U.S. stock market, which has outperformed global peers over the past year, is now anticipating a correction. However, analysts argue that bitcoin has still not fulfilled its expected role as a hedge against broader market declines. Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, pointed out the deepening sell-off on Wall Street and noted that “warning signs are stacking up.” Green highlighted weakening consumer confidence, persistent high inflation, and rising unemployment claims as critical factors contributing to the market’s vulnerability.
U.S. Economic Contraction Forecasted
According to the closely watched GDPNow model from the Atlanta Federal Reserve, the U.S. economy is expected to contract at an annual rate of 2.4% in the first quarter of 2025. If this forecast holds true, it would mark the first quarterly contraction since Q1 2022, raising concerns about a potential recession.
Structural Concerns and Investor Strategy Shifts
Green emphasized that the resilience seen in risky assets during previous rallies is now giving way to deeper structural concerns. He advised investors to rotate into areas of strength rather than hold onto past winners, which may struggle in the new market landscape. Alternative assets are becoming increasingly important, with gold standing out as a strong hedge against volatility. Bitcoin, on the other hand, may gain further institutional acceptance as digital gold.
Bitcoin’s Safe Haven Debate
Ruslan Lienkha, Chief of Markets at YouHodler, echoed Green’s concerns, asserting that the market is experiencing a correction, which could turn into a medium-term bearish trend. Lienkha pointed out that heightened uncertainty is causing traders to close long positions temporarily. When asked about bitcoin’s role as a safe haven in the current market environment, Lienkha was skeptical. “Bitcoin is definitely not serving as a safe haven during stock market declines at the moment. Instead, it behaves more like a high-risk tech stock, showing elevated volatility and sharper price fluctuations,” he said.
Lienkha added that while brief periods of divergence might occur, bitcoin’s medium-term performance is likely to remain in line with overall equity market trends.
