Solana CEO Admits Mistake After Backlash Over ‘America Is Back’ Ad
Solana CEO– Anatoly Yakovenko, CEO of Solana Labs, has publicly apologized for a controversial advertisement that aired recently, which has since sparked widespread backlash. The ad, titled “America Is Back — Time to Accelerate,” combined themes of American patriotism with a tech-forward message, but it also contained politically charged commentary around gender identity.
In a March 19 post on X (formerly Twitter), Anatoly Yakovenko expressed regret, saying, “The ad was bad, and it’s still gnawing at my soul.” He continued, acknowledging that he had initially downplayed the situation but realized it was more harmful than he thought. “I am ashamed I downplayed it instead of just calling it what it is – mean and punching down on a marginalized group,” he wrote.
Anatoly Yakovenko praised members of the Solana ecosystem who had criticized the ad. The advertisement, which appeared on Solana’s X account, had garnered around 1.2 million views and over 1,300 comments before it was deleted just hours after going live.
The CEO emphasized that he would learn from the incident and refocus Solana on its core mission of promoting open-source software development and decentralization, remaining “out of cultural wars.” Although Solana as a company has not officially commented on the controversy, its X account reshared Yakovenko’s post, acknowledging the situation with their 3.3 million followers.
The two-and-a-half-minute ad was intended to promote the Solana Accelerate conference but quickly became the center of controversy. It featured a man, symbolizing America, in a therapy session discussing his thoughts on innovation, including crypto. The therapist suggested that the man focus on “creating a new gender” and later mentioned pronouns. The man rejected the suggestion, emphasizing his desire to focus on technological advancements, not social issues.
This controversial ad raised concerns from industry figures, including Adam Cochran of Cinneamhain Ventures, who highlighted that transgender people have made disproportionate contributions to open-source software and cryptography. According to a GitHub survey from 2017, 1% of open-source developers were transgender, showcasing the significant impact this group has had on the tech industry.
