Polygon zkEVM Outage: Blockchain Sequencer Failure Leads to 10 Hours of Network Downtime

Crypto News – The Ethereum scaling mechanism Polygon has declared that a problem with its blockchain sequencer is the reason behind the current outage of their zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM).

Polygon told its two million followers on X that the problem is exclusive to the zkEVM and does not affect any other chains that have been deployed with the Polygon chain development kit (CDK).

This only impacts Polygon zkEVM (which is the only rollup) and does not impact Polygon PoS, Polygon CDK, or any chain that has deployed using Polygon CDK.

Polygon explained that the sequencer on the blockchain, which groups and combines transactions into batches before sending them to the Polygon zkEVM smart contract on the Ethereum main network, is the source of the issue.

Users React to 10-Hour Outage

Polygon introduced the zkEVM to its mainnet beta in March 2023 with the goal of enabling developers to implement smart contracts with more cost-effectiveness and finality. Polygon asserted that decentralized apps (DApps) can achieve improved speed by scaling through transaction batching, which is made possible by the open-source zkEVM. However, this issue arose just one month after a large outage of the Solana network.

Several X users were conjecturing as to why the cryptocurrency community has not spoken out about the unanticipated extended network outage. For instance, “Why is nobody talking about how Polygon zkevm has been down for 10h and is still down?” inquired a user on X, 0xngmi.
