Tornado Cash Receives $7M of Stolen Funds from Penpie Hacker After $27M Exploit

Penpie lost $27 million worth of digital assets as a result of an exploit on September 3. The DeFi platform responded by stopping withdrawals and deposits. The Penpie hacker transferred $7 million in assets to the crypto mixer Tornado Cash in less than a day following the breach. After the cyberattack, the exploiter accountable for the March 2023 $195 million flash loan assault on Euler Finance transmitted an on-chain message to the Penpie hacker. The decision not to return the stolen money was applauded by the other thief.

Euler Finance Recovers $195M After Offering Hacker Deal to Keep $20M

The hacker that targeted Euler Finance, however, was unable to accomplish the same result. Lending protocol gave the criminal an opportunity to keep roughly $20 million provided 90% of the stolen monies were repaid in an on-chain message issued to them on March 15, 2023. By promising to offer a $1 million prize to anyone who could provide information leading to an arrest, the protocol also intimidated the hacker.

The Euler Finance hacker refunded any funds that could be recoverable on April 4. This indicates that 90% of the stolen data was recovered by the protocol. Following this, the $1 million reward campaign to apprehend the hacker was discontinued by the Euler Foundation.
