Offchain Labs has unveiled BOLD (Bounded Liquidity Delay), a new permissionless validation protocol for Arbitrum chains. This major technical achievement is designed to resolve Rollup disputes, further bolstering the security of the Arbitrum chain.

BOLD aims to ensure the security and vitality of the Arbitrum technology chain by minimizing delays in dispute resolution and thwarting dishonest parties from escalating the costs of honest parties. This innovative validation method also sets a definitive upper limit of seven days for additional confirmation delays, thereby making it immune to delay attacks.

Status of BOLD

As it stands, BOLD’s code and specifications are now accessible on Github. However, there are several steps that must be completed before BOLD is production-ready:

  • Instructions for running the Arbitrum Nitro development with the BOLD challenge will be released in the coming weeks.
  • Official proof-of-concept code for BOLD, written in the Isabelle programming language, will be published. An academic paper is also in the works.
  • A new test network environment will be rolled out for BOLD to allow for community participation.
  • Should there be positive community feedback, plans will be put in place to prepare the Arbitrum Improvement Proposal (AIP). This will allow the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to decide whether to adopt this new protocol in Arbitrum One and Nova.

A Commitment to Security

Security has always been a paramount concern for Offchain Labs in developing Arbitrum Technology. This has led to significant investment in building and improving the fraud proof system.

BOLD exemplifies this commitment by enabling permissionless validation of the Arbitrum chain, thereby enhancing its level of decentralization. The protocol ensures that even a single, honest validator can successfully win Ethereum disputes against any opponent.

About Permissionless Validation

Permissionless validation refers to a decentralized approach in verifying and validating transactions or operations in a blockchain network. Unlike in a permissioned system where only authorized nodes can validate transactions, a permissionless validation system allows any node in the network to participate in the validation process.

This increases the degree of decentralization, enhances network security, and ensures that the system is open and inclusive, making it particularly appealing for public blockchains.
