Karachi Cryptocurrency Kidnapping: $340,000 Stolen from Binance Account, Police Involved
Karachi Cryptocurrency Ransom– On December 25, 2024, a shocking case emerged in Karachi, Pakistan, where seven individuals, including an officer from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), were arrested for allegedly kidnapping a cryptocurrency trader. The victim, Mohammed Arsalan, was taken from Manghopir, Karachi, and forced to transfer $340,000 from his Binance account to several wallets controlled by his abductors.
The Abduction and Forced Transfer
Arsalan, a 30-year-old cryptocurrency trader, was kidnapped by armed men in an unmarked police vehicle. He was held captive, where the kidnappers forced him to unlock his Binance account and transfer significant sums to various wallets. After the transfer, he was released hours later near the Quaid-e-Azam mausoleum. Arsalan later posted screenshots of his Binance withdrawal history on Facebook, showing transfers in multiple cryptocurrencies, including USDT, amounting to over $340,000.
Arrests and Investigation
The authorities acted swiftly, and seven suspects were arrested, including individuals with previous criminal records. Mohammed Rizwan Shah, Tariq Hasan Shah, Muzamil Raza, and others were taken into custody by the Anti-Violence Crime Cell. Despite these arrests, the exact timeline and evidence linking each suspect to the crime remain unclear.
The Challenges of Tracing Cryptocurrency in Decentralized Finance
The case highlights the challenges of tracking funds in the world of decentralized finance (DeFi). While Arsalan assured the public that authorities were working to trace the stolen funds, experts noted that tracking cryptocurrency transactions through decentralized exchanges and wallets is notoriously difficult due to the anonymity they offer.
Legal and Public Response
Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon acknowledged the misconduct by rogue officers, but his statement has been met with skepticism. Critics are calling for a more transparent investigation to restore public confidence in law enforcement, especially given the involvement of police officers in the crime.
Arsalan, devastated by his loss, has vowed to hold those responsible accountable and has pledged to repay any losses incurred by others involved.
