Grand Theft Auto-Themed Meme Coins Surge and Crash on Solana Amid Crypto Speculation
The flood of Grand Theft Auto-themed meme coins on Solana shows no signs of slowing, with new entrants like GTA 6 Coin and GTA Guy briefly soaring past a $1 million market cap within the past day.
However, as with many speculative meme coins, the hype was short-lived. Both tokens have since plummeted by over 90% from their peaks, now sitting at market caps of approximately $69,000 and $12,000, respectively.
These are just two among dozens of GTA-inspired meme coins launched via Solana’s popular token launchpad, Pump.fun. A quick search for “GTA” or “Grand Theft Auto” on DexScreener, a leading blockchain token analytics tool, reveals a long list of nearly worthless tokens scattered across Solana, Arbitrum, and Ethereum—some dating back over a year.
GTA and Crypto: Persistent Rumors, No Confirmation
Speculation about crypto’s involvement in Grand Theft Auto 6 has circulated since at least 2021, with rumors suggesting that in-game rewards might include Bitcoin or Ethereum. The speculation gained traction again in 2024, but neither Rockstar Games nor its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have ever confirmed any blockchain or cryptocurrency integration.
In fact, Rockstar has taken steps against crypto-related activity in its games before. In 2022, the company cracked down on modded fan-operated GTA 5 servers, explicitly banning the use of crypto and NFTs, which had been used to tokenize in-game assets.
One of the Most Anticipated Games in History
While crypto’s role in GTA 6 remains uncertain, the game itself is undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated releases of all time. Billions of dollars in sales are projected within its first year alone.
The official trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 debuted in 2023, and the game is expected to launch later this year—though Rockstar has yet to confirm an exact release date.
