EigenLayer Airdrop Scam- Protecting Yourself from EigenLayer’s Twitter Scam

EigenLayer Airdrop Scam– The developer behind the Ethereum restaking protocol EigenLayer has confirmed that its Twitter (now X) account was hijacked on Friday, following the emergence of suspicious posts.

Fake Airdrop Scam Uncovered

On Friday morning, EigenLayer’s account was flooded with posts promoting a fraudulent airdrop. These messages urged users to click on a link that supposedly directed them to the Eigen Foundation’s website, but in reality, it was a phishing link. Eigen Labs, the developer of the protocol, issued a warning, stating, The @EigenLayer handle has been compromised. Please do not engage with any suspicious links and actively double-check and verify you are engaging with ‘eigenlayer.xyz.’ An update will be provided once secured.

Security analyst Scam Sniffer reported that the scam managed to defraud at least one victim of approximately $800,000 in cryptocurrencies. The compromised links appeared to function as wallet drainers, capable of siphoning assets from any wallet that had granted access.

Timeline of the Attack

The first suspicious post appeared around 7 AM ET, claiming to offer a reallocation of EIGEN tokens from EigenLayer’s Season 2 airdrop, as per blockchain security firm PeckShield Alert. Subsequent posts employed various tactics to lure users into clicking the same malicious link. One particularly misleading post featured a photo of a dog wearing a flower crown, designed to entice potential victims.

It is important to note that the claim period for Season 2 of EigenLayer’s stakeholder airdrop concluded last month, raising further suspicion regarding the authenticity of these posts.

Current Status of the Twitter Account

As of now, it remains unclear whether EigenLayer has successfully regained control of its Twitter account. Eigen Labs has yet to respond to requests for further information from Decrypt. This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with online scams in the cryptocurrency space, emphasizing the need for vigilance when interacting with social media accounts related to crypto projects.
