Users were required to provide iris and facial scans for a digital ID and free tokens. Several governments blocked its operations for failing to meet local privacy laws, exposing the risks of handling sensitive biometric data without proper protections.

Black Box Nodes and Lack of Transparency

A key problem with Worldcoin’s network is its use of black box nodes, where only insiders can verify transactions. This permissioned layer-2 blockchain on Ethereum lacks transparency, undermining the very principles of blockchain decentralization. Storing biometric data in a closed, unverified system increases vulnerability to data breaches and attacks.

ZK-Proofs and Their Limitations

Worldcoin was built using zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, technology designed to validate data without revealing its contents. While ZK is seen as a potential solution for protecting biometric privacy, it doesn’t address issues like data storage or access control. The Worldcoin data breach shows that ZK-proofs alone aren’t enough to safeguard sensitive information.

To solve these privacy issues, ZK-proofs should be combined with Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). FHE allows data to be processed while encrypted, ensuring that biometric data remains protected. This combination enables secure, verifiable identities without exposing private data, offering a far stronger privacy solution than Worldcoin’s current model.

The Path Forward: Secure Blockchain Privacy

For blockchain to succeed in real-world applications like digital IDs, privacy must be a top priority. The ZK-FHE stack offers a proven, scalable solution for protecting biometric data, ensuring that fingerprints or facial scans remain encrypted and private. The Worldcoin controversy underscores the importance of building privacy-first systems in blockchain, and using advanced encryption technologies to create safe, decentralized identities.
