The developers of the web3 social networking app Damus have received a warning from Apple that if they don’t release an update to keep the program compliant with its standards, Apple would remove the app from its platform.

Damus was warned for its “Zaps” feature, which it sent to its users to enable them to earn Bitcoin. Apple told Damus:

To ensure there is no interruption of the availability of your app on the App Store, please submit an update within 14 days of the date of this message. If we do not receive an update compliant with the App Store Review Guidelines within 14 days, your app will be removed from sale.

The charged Web3 social network highlighted the notification’s timing in a tweet, noting that it arrived just before their speech at the Oslo Freedom Forum, where they were scheduled to talk about the role of decentralized social networks with lightning integration in granting the general public financial independence.

What is Zaps?

On Nostr clients like Damus, Zaps are a type of Lightning-backed Bitcoin payment system that lets users tip content producers.

Nostr is a protocol; an open standard upon which anyone can build. Nostr itself is not an app or service that you sign up for.

William Casarin’s Statement

Damus core developer William Casarin said in a statement that they are aware that the zaps feature needs to be removed to stay in the App Store and that they will probably remove it. However, he also underlined that if they don’t do this, the app will be removed from the store.

According to Damus, the company neither sells digital items nor offers services for doing so. For facilitating p2p (peer-to-peer) transactions like Venmo or CashApp, it merely includes a tip button, it was included. Apple would become “a dead platform for Bitcoin applications trying to innovate on lightning,” according to Damus if it removed the Damus app.

About Damus

Damus describes itself as a social network that is user-controlled and independent of centralized corporations. The program is based on Nostr, or “Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays,” a distributed network that permits end-to-end private messaging. Within its network, there are no servers.

About Apple

The iPhone, iPad, and Macintosh computers were all developed by Apple Inc. (previously Apple Computer Inc.), an American manufacturer of consumer electronics and computers. With a market cap of more than $2 trillion, Apple is among the biggest firms in the world.
