Vitalik Buterin’s $8 Million ETH Transfer Could Signal New Charity Initiative
Vitalik Buterin – Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently transferred 3,000 Ether (ETH), valued at over $8 million, to a new multisignature wallet. This significant transfer was reported on August 9 by blockchain intelligence firm Lookonchain, which suggested that Buterin’s action might indicate a potential donation. Lookonchain’s post stated:
“vitalik.eth transferred 3,000 $ETH ($8.05M) to a multi-sig safe wallet 20 minutes ago, possibly as a donation.”
The Ether was sent to an unknown wallet identified as “0xfEB,” which might be associated with a charitable organization.
Buterin’s History of Significant Crypto Donations
This $8 million transfer is not the first time Buterin has made a substantial cryptocurrency donation. In May 2021, he donated over $1.2 billion worth of crypto to the Indian Covid-Crypto Relief Fund. The donation was executed using over 50 trillion Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens, according to blockchain data. Additionally, Buterin has previously sent more than $441 million in Akita (AKITA) coins to the open-source bug bounty platform Gitcoin and has made significant donations in dog-themed memecoins.
Crypto Donations Expected to Surpass $10 Billion in the Next Decade
Crypto donations are becoming increasingly prominent due to their rapid processing and global reach during crises, offering an alternative to the less efficient traditional fiscal systems. The Giving Block, a crypto charity platform, projects that crypto donations will exceed $10 billion within a decade.
The Giving Block’s 2023 annual report, titled “Crypto Philanthropy Data, Trends & Predictions,” revealed that total crypto donations on the platform surpassed $125 million in 2022. The report forecasts that crypto donations could reach $1 billion by August 2027, $5 billion by June 2031, and surpass $10 billion by November 2032.
Beyond global crises, cryptocurrency donations are also making waves in politics. In May, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his presidential campaign would accept cryptocurrency donations, highlighting the growing integration of digital assets into various sectors.
