Reducing Block Finalization Time and Staking Requirements

Additionally, he suggests lowering the ether requirement for staking from 32 ether to just 1 ether. Another critical issue highlighted by Buterin is the predictability of which validator will propose the next block, creating potential security vulnerabilities. He believes the solution lies in implementing a single secret leader election process, which would obscure this information until the block is produced. According to Buterin, this approach would mitigate denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and enhance overall network security. He emphasizes the importance of keeping Ethereum a relatively simple protocol, stating, We highly value Ethereum being a reasonably simple protocol, and we do not want complexity to increase further.

Improving Confirmation Times and Addressing Future Threats

Buterin also sees potential in reducing Ethereum’s transaction confirmation times to approximately four seconds. He argues that this would enhance the user experience for both Layer 1 and rollup solutions, ultimately making decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols more efficient.

Furthermore, he calls for more research into measures that could help Ethereum recover from a potential 51% attack and increase the quorum threshold needed for consensus. Buterin raises a crucial point about the impending challenges posed by quantum computing, predicting that quantum resistance may become increasingly important by 2030. He remarks, This justifies conservatism in the assumptions around the performance of proof-of-stake designs, and also is a cause to be more proactive in developing quantum-resistant alternatives.
