Theta Labs has officially launched EdgeCloud for Mobile, a platform that allows users to contribute the GPU power of their smartphones to its decentralized network in exchange for TFUEL tokens.

As per a press release shared with crypto.news, EdgeCloud for Mobile is designed to leverage the computing power of the approximately 3.9 billion active Android devices globally, enhancing Theta’s decentralized cloud computing network.

Theta EdgeCloud operates as a DePIN-powered hybrid cloud-edge computing platform, utilizing over 30,000 distributed nodes to provide scalable and cost-effective GPU computing services. With the growing computational capabilities of smartphones, the platform aims to tap into these resources to enhance its offerings.

According to Mitch Liu, co-founder and CEO of Theta Labs, incorporating smartphones into its network of decentralized nodes will significantly expand its operational scale.

“By growing from 30,000 PC nodes to potentially millions of mobile devices, this move will dramatically enhance our network’s capabilities. Each device adds to our distributed GPU power,” Liu said.

These mobile devices will be instrumental in handling AI-related computations, such as video object detection, by executing small, parallel processing tasks. Theta Labs estimates that if just 30,000 Android devices contribute their GPU power for eight hours daily, they could generate a staggering 240,000 hours of computational work per day.

The EdgeCloud mobile app, already available on the Google Play Store, enables users to contribute their resources only when their device is plugged in or connected to a Wi-Fi network. This ensures minimal battery drain and data usage, allowing users to earn passive income with minimal effort.

In return for their contributions, users receive TFUEL tokens, the native currency of the Theta Network. At the time of reporting, TFUEL had surged 98.8% over the past year.

The app supports any Android phone or tablet made after 2020, with no geographical limitations.

Theta EdgeCloud has already secured several academic partnerships, utilizing its resources for advanced AI research in areas such as media, healthcare, bioinformatics, and finance. One of the most recent institutions to join the DePIN-powered network is Seoul Women’s University.
