Sui Blockchain – Web3 Community Thrives in Dubai: Clear Regulations Attract Major Crypto Players
Sui Blockchain – The Sui blockchain has officially launched a new hub in Dubai, aimed at serving as an incubator for blockchain developers and entrepreneurs. In an exclusive interview with CoinDesk, Kostas Chalkias, co-founder and chief cryptographer at Mysten Labs—creators of the Sui network—shared his vision for this initiative.
Bringing an “Army of Developers” to Dubai
Originally from Greece and recently relocated from California to Dubai, Chalkias emphasized his ambition to assemble a powerful team of solution engineers. “Like Leonidas, the Greek war hero, we are bringing an army of developers, and if it is super successful in the very first month, we will probably make it like Leonidas’ 300,” he stated. Chalkias believes that even a small team of highly skilled engineers can achieve significant results.
Instant Solutions for Government Needs
The primary focus of this hub is to expedite the development of blockchain-based solutions for governmental challenges. Chalkias explained that rather than spending days to devise a solution, this facility is capable of constructing smart contracts on the spot. “When you’re preaching an idea, we will be able to sit down for two hours and build the proof of concept there. No other blockchain can do a POC on the spot. This hasn’t happened before,” he noted.
Collaboration with Ghaf Group
This ambitious project is being launched in collaboration with Ghaf Group, a prominent blockchain firm in the region. The Dubai hub marks the first in a planned series of global hubs, which the Sui network aims to establish. Dubai’s favorable regulatory environment has been attracting the Web3 community, with major cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance, Crypto.com, and OKX receiving approvals to operate in the region this year.
Aiming to Become the Heart of Hackathons
Chalkias remarked on the UAE’s current strengths and limitations: “The UAE is top for deals but not the actual development.” He expressed his aspiration for the hub to become the heart of hackathons and implementations in Dubai. Initially, the hub will focus on assisting the government in its digitalization efforts.
Sui Network’s Rising Prominence
The Sui network, established by former Meta employees—including Chalkias—has seen rapid success, surpassing established blockchains like Cardano, Near, and Aptos in total value locked (TVL) metrics as of February this year. Many in the industry are now considering Sui as a leading alternative to Solana.
Monthly Hackathons and Engineering Investment
“We are building solution engineering here in Dubai,” Chalkias asserted. “We want to invest in the region and enhance engineering capacity. I plan to run hackathons every month in Dubai where participants can work intensively for three days without sleep.” This commitment reflects a broader goal of fostering innovation and collaboration within the blockchain ecosystem.
In conclusion, the launch of the Sui blockchain hub in Dubai represents a significant step towards establishing the emirate as a leading center for blockchain development and innovation. With its unique vision, collaborative efforts, and focus on rapid solution delivery, Dubai is poised to become a pivotal player in the global blockchain landscape.
