The Twitter account of News24, one of the leading news channels in India, was taken over by crypto hackers.
News24 Twitter Account Taken Over by Crypto Hackers
Hackers sent fake links to users on the News24 Twitter account, promising an XRP airdrop. Considering that the Twitter account has around 1.4 million followers and is a global news channel, many people trusted it and clicked on the fake link. The hackers also showed XRP CEO Brad Galinghouse in the link preview to convince users.
It is not known how many people have been victimized by fraud in total, but considering the number of followers the news channel has, it is possible to say that many people have been defrauded.
India is the New Address for Crypto Fraud
Crypto scams and hacks are on the agenda every year. News24’s hack attack was not the first for India. In previous years, the accounts of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), and Mann Deshi Mahila Bank were also compromised by crypto hackers.
The biggest event for India was the theft of Narendra Modi’s account, which had more than 87 million followers. At the time, hackers posted false news from Narendra Modi’s account that the Indian government’s currency would now be Bitcoin and that the government had purchased 500 BTC.
