Heather Morgan’s Role in Bitfinex Hack: A Detailed Overview

Heather Morgan– U.S. prosecutors are pushing for Heather Morgan, also known as the rapper Razzlekhan, to serve 18 months in prison for her involvement in laundering 120,000 Bitcoin stolen from the Bitfinex crypto exchange in 2016. This case highlights the ongoing legal ramifications following one of the largest cryptocurrency hacks in history.

Leniency Requested Due to Cooperation

In a filing dated October 9, federal prosecutors requested a lenient sentence for Morgan, citing her substantial assistance in a plea bargain involving both her and her husband, Ilya Lichtenshtein. The couple reached this agreement in July 2023, which could potentially mitigate Morgan’s sentence.

Prosecutors characterized Morgan as a lower-level participant compared to Lichtenshtein, arguing that she had only laundered a small fraction of the stolen Bitcoin. In August 2023, Morgan pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering and fraud, admitting her role in helping to launder Bitcoin valued at approximately $7.2 billion today.

Morgan and Lichtenshtein initially faced accusations solely related to the laundering of funds stolen in the 2016 Bitfinex hack. However, Lichtenshtein later confessed to being behind both the hack and the laundering efforts. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit laundering and faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, Morgan was initially unaware of how Lichtenshtein had acquired the 120,000 BTC. However, by early 2020, Lichtenshtein informed her of his involvement in the hack, leading her to assist him in laundering the stolen funds and concealing his actions.

[Morgan] made a conscious decision to engage in specific criminal activity, helping her husband launder millions in stolen funds for their personal gain, prosecutors stated in their filing. They emphasized that her actions were not impulsive but rather a deliberate participation in a long-term conspiracy.

Complex Techniques for Money Laundering

Prosecutors revealed that Morgan and Lichtenshtein utilized a variety of technologically sophisticated means to launder the stolen Bitcoin. This included using non-compliant cryptocurrency exchanges, darknet markets, and crypto mixers to obscure their tracks.

Moreover, Morgan reportedly used some of the stolen funds to buy physical gold coins, which she buried at a secret location that has since been disclosed to law enforcement. This illustrates the lengths to which she went to conceal the illicit gains.

In addition to the proposed 18-month sentence, prosecutors have urged the court to require Morgan to return the seized crypto assets from the Bitfinex Hack Wallet as restitution to Bitfinex. The wallet contains approximately 95,000 BTC, 117,400 Bitcoin Cash (BCH), 117,400 Bitcoin Satoshi Vision (BSV), and 118,100 Bitcoin Gold (BTG), collectively valued at over $6 billion.

Morgan’s sentencing hearing is set for November 15, just a day after Lichtenshtein’s scheduled sentencing on November 14. This case continues to draw attention as it unfolds, reflecting broader issues surrounding cryptocurrency security and crime.
