Ethereum Name Service to Introduce Blockchain-based .box Web Domain in September
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is preparing to launch a new web domain that will be operational in September. This domain, called .box, will function similar to traditional internet domains and can be routed on web browsers.
The .box domain originates from the My.Box project and will be supported by ENS, a blockchain-based internet name service for Ethereum users. This innovative domain will allow users to utilize domains for both cryptocurrency and internet services, including email. The integration of .box into the ENS protocol marks an important step in bridging the gap between Web2 and Web3, expanding the reach of decentralized use cases.
Registrations and transfers of .box domains will be conducted on the Ethereum blockchain. Ownership of the associated NFT will encompass both the Domain Name System and My.Box ENS-based names.
While ENS currently operates the .eth name service, providing a user-friendly alternative to lengthy Ethereum crypto addresses, the .box domain sets itself apart by seamlessly interacting with the internet’s default naming protocol, DNS. This integration of ENS and DNS protocols enables .box domains to be accessible on all web browsers, enhancing their usability and compatibility.
The My.Box project offers a unique feature by enabling the simultaneous use of Ethereum names and conventional web names. By tokenizing a DNS domain with each naming registration and introducing a crypto counterpart, users can leverage .box domains for websites and email. The deployment of My.Box on an Ethereum Layer 2 solution ensures minimal gas fees, optimizing the user experience.
However, Nick Johnson, the founder of ENS, highlighted potential challenges related to censorship resistance. Unlike .eth domains, which possess a higher level of resistance, .box names must adhere to certain regulations outlined by ICANN’s TLD policies. Under specified and rare circumstances, DNS records associated with .box domains could be subject to seizure.
In summary, the introduction of the .box domain by Ethereum Name Service represents a significant development in blockchain-based internet naming. It offers a versatile and integrated solution for Ethereum users, allowing them to seamlessly interact with web browsers and leverage both crypto and internet services.
