Crypto News – A part of the money taken through Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixer, has been laundered by Lazarus Group, a North Korean cybercrime gang said to be responsible for the HTX and HECO bridge attacks last year.
Cryptos Stolen by Lazarus Group: Hackers Move $13 Million Fund to Tornado Cash
The wallet addresses associated with Lazarus were determined to have laundered $13 million from the hack via Tornado Cash throughout the past day, according to data from blockchain analytics company Elliptic. Included in the $100 million worth of cryptocurrency that was taken in November 2023 from the cross-chain bridge HECO and cryptocurrency exchange HTX, three HTX hot wallets were compromised.
Lazarus was later identified as the hacker by Elliptic and other blockchain security companies, and it quickly converted the stolen tokens into ether via decentralized exchanges. These were dormant monies until March 13, when the hackers used 40 transactions to move $13 million from the HTX/HECO thefts to Tornado Cash.
This change in behavior and return to the use of Tornado Cash likely reflects the limited number of large-scale mixers now operating, thanks to law enforcement takedowns of services such as Sinbad.io and Blender.io,
