An unreleased crypto wallet prototype has been discovered in the files of Microsoft Edge, the browser developed by technology giant Microsoft.
Crypto Wallet Discovered Inside Microsoft Edge Browser
Alcabore, a software researcher, was the first to discover and publicize the wallet prototype. According to screenshots posted by the software researcher on Twitter, Microsoft has integrated a non-custodial crypto wallet into its browser. Albacore said:
“[The] Edge team are kings of throwing every imaginable thing at the wall and seeing if it sticks. The list of obsolete gimmick features that they tried and eventually removed is quite long.”
All-in-One Wallet
The integrated codes include features such as a decentralized application explorer, a news page, and purchasing cryptocurrencies. The enhancements have been added to the Microsoft browser but are hidden. Alcabore said:
“Considering I was able to use it just fine I’d imagine that a rollout is not out of question, I would hope that if it was a tiny trial they wouldn’t bother deploying the services to production.”
It Rivals Brave Browser
The Edge browser has been evolving since it replaced Internet Explorer. In the meantime, other web browsers are also developing towards blockchain technology. Initially, Opera added a wallet and dApp link to its browser.
Brave Browser became Opera’s biggest competitor in this process. This year, Brave, a browser focused on Web3 and privacy, added support for the Solana blockchain. Then, by developing the crypto wallet, it announced that users could buy and sell crypto without having to leave the Brave wallet.
Microsoft Supports Blockchain
Technology giant Microsoft seems to be interested in blockchain technologies at the moment. Last year, it led an investment round for Web3 data warehouse platform Space and Time. Now Microsoft is preparing a new wallet, and it looks like it will be a serious competitor to other Web3 browsers. A Microsoft spokesperson said:
“At Microsoft, we regularly test new features to explore new experiences for our customers. We look forward to learning and collecting feedback from customers but have nothing further to share at this time.”
