According to a Metamask Developer, more than 5,000 ETH was stolen by a sophisticated hacker using an unknown attack method!
Crypto Veterans Targeted by Mystery Wallet Robberies
Recently, a Metamask developer, in an article titled Crypto Veterans, Target of Mysterious Wallet Robberies, stated that more than 5,000 Ethereum (ETH), an unspecified amount of tokens, and NFTs had been stolen from many chains since late 2022.
The developer expressed the situation with the following words: “I don’t know how big it is, but since Dec 2022, it’s drained 5000+ ETH and ??? in tokens / NFTs / coins across 11+ chains.”
Continuing his words by saying that he has been examining these incidents recently, the developer explained that they have not yet found out how the hacks took place.
OGs Targeted in Wallet Robberies
The developer conducted detailed studies on the robberies and found that these attacks deliberately targeted OGs.
The developer said: “This is NOT a low-brow phishing site or a random scammer. It has NOT rekt a single noob. It ONLY rekts OGs.”
One oddity among the cases is that the heists were keys generated between 2014 and 2022, and the victims had multiple addresses. So, the victims are essentially people who have been working in the cryptocurrency markets for some time.
How to Keep Assets Safe?
The developer, who has been exposing this phenomenon in the cryptocurrency markets since late 2022, advises users to be very careful and predicts that the attacker has taken a data cache from the victim’s device.
“My best guess rn is that someone has got themselves a fatty cache of data from 1+ yr ago & is methodically draining the keys as they parse them from the treasure trove.“
Underlining the security issue, the developer warned users to stay away from storing all their digital assets in a single wallet key. The developer said that users should at least split their crypto assets into two keys or store them in a hardware wallet.
