Bern Parliament Votes to Investigate Bitcoin Mining’s Role in Energy Efficiency

A motion to investigate Bitcoin mining as a means of utilizing excess energy and stabilizing the country’s electrical system has been passed by the parliament of Canton of Bern, Switzerland. Despite government resistance, the idea, which was first proposed by the cross-party Parliamentary Group Bitcoin on March 14, 2024, was approved by the Grand Council with a resounding vote of 85 to 46.

The government council is instructed by the project to evaluate how Bitcoin mining might generate revenue and recycle wasted energy. The “Cantonal Bitcoin Strategy III” initiative, which was presented by the bipartisan Parliamentary Group Bitcoin, aims to recruit businesses with a creative Bitcoin strategy to Canton of Bern.

According to a report by Blocktrainer, the proposal was supported by several political parties, including the Swiss People’s Party, Green Liberal Party, Center Party, and EDU. There were even some left-green groups that voiced opposition. EDU representative Samuel Kullmann, a major supporter of the motion, celebrated the decision as a triumph over skepticism.
