Cosmos Evm: How Evmos Is Shaping The Future Of Multichain Ecosystems

Cosmos EVM Launch: Is This the Future of Ethereum Compatibility in Multichain Ecosystems?

Cosmos EVM – The Cosmos Interchain Foundation has announced the open-sourcing of Evmos as the canonical Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) framework for its multichain ecosystem, which includes over 200 appchains. This significant move will see the framework, originally developed under the Evmos project, transitioning to Cosmos EVM within the official Interchain software stack, alongside other critical tools like the Cosmos SDK.

A New Standard for Ethereum Compatibility in Cosmos Ecosystem

With this transition, Cosmos now has a standardized version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This allows Cosmos-based blockchains to integrate Cosmos EVM for full EVM compatibility, including support for JSON-RPC and Ethereum wallet compatibility through a lightweight EVM configuration for native ERC-20 tokens. The integration aims to enhance cross-chain interoperability between the broader EVM ecosystem and Cosmos, particularly through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, a cornerstone of Cosmos’ design.

Changes in Evmos Core Team and Token Performance

As part of this shift, Evmos co-founder Federico Kunze Küllmer will step down from his role as a core contributor but will continue to advise the Interchain Foundation on Cosmos EVM’s interoperability and modular architecture. Kunze Küllmer’s firm, Altiplanic, which was the core contributor to the Evmos codebase, will no longer contribute to the project. Meanwhile, the Evmos token (EVMOS) has dropped by over 30% in the past 24 hours, according to The Block’s price data.

Evmos’ Journey and the Rise of EVM

Originally conceptualized in 2016 as Ethermint, Evmos went live on the Cosmos mainnet in 2022 to introduce EVM in the Cosmos ecosystem. The same year, it raised $27 million in a token sale led by Polychain Capital. The EVM standard has since become the most widely adopted framework for smart contracts, found across many blockchains aiming to replicate Ethereum’s success.

This move underscores Cosmos’ commitment to bridging different blockchain ecosystems, while enhancing its position in the growing multi-chain world.
