Serious Vulnerability in Libbitcoin Explorer 3.x

According to SlowMist, Distrust discovered a serious vulnerability on August 10 that affects cryptocurrency wallets using Libbitcoin Explorer 3.x. Through the use of the Mersenne Twister pseudo-random number generator (PRNG), this issue enables unauthorized access to private keys and has real-world effects.

The implementation of the PRNG in Libbitcoin Explorer version 3.x is where the vulnerability originates. This implementation uses a 32-bit system time as its seed and the Mersenne Twister algorithm. Through the use of brute-force techniques, attackers can quickly find a user’s secret key using this risky method.

This issue affects users of Libbitcoin Explorer 3.x and developers who use libbitcoin-system 3.6 to build libraries. Affected cryptocurrencies include Dogecoin, Solana, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Zcash, Ripple, Ethereum, and Ripple.
