The main team behind Base, a blockchain network supported by Coinbase, has announced its preparations for an upcoming mainnet launch. However, the launch is contingent upon meeting specific conditions.

According to a blog post by the Base team, their launch requirements include the demonstration of stable testnet performance, the successful upgrade of Bedrock by Optimism, and the completion of thorough reviews and audits. The team places a strong emphasis on ensuring the secure operation of the network.

The upcoming Bedrock upgrade by Optimism, scheduled for June, is expected to enhance the security and resilience of the Optimism mainnet bridge. This enhancement is crucial for projects like Base that rely on it.

Base is built on Optimism’s OP Stack, a development software stack. It functions as a rollup network similar to Optimism, aiming to conduct off-chain computations on a secondary layer to facilitate faster and more cost-effective transactions. It also maintains the security advantages of the Ethereum mainnet.

Additionally, Base has the potential to become the default Layer 2 network for Coinbase’s on-chain products. Currently, the project is in the testnet phase, which involves creating replicas of the actual network for testing purposes. A smooth and glitch-free operation on the testnet would indicate the mainnet’s potential effectiveness.

The Base team has reported significant interest in the testnet from various developers and projects, including Blackbird, Thirdweb, OAK, and Parallel. Prominent DeFi platforms like Uniswap and Aave are also considering deploying on Base once it is live.

Following the mainnet launch later this year, the network will enter a “genesis window” period. During this time, developers will be able to deploy applications with direct support from the Base core team. The team clarified that they do not intend to issue a network token.
