Andrew Yang Joins Forces with 300 Global Experts Urging Government Intervention Against AI Deepfakes

Crypto News– More than 300 experts spanning technology, artificial intelligence (AI), digital ethics, and child safety worldwide have united to pen an open letter urging governments to take urgent steps in addressing the deepfake dilemma.

Released on Feb. 21 under the title ‘Disrupting the Deepfake Supply Chain,’ the letter implores governments, policymakers, and leaders to enforce measures within the supply chain to curb the spread of deepfakes.

It delineates three primary actions: firstly, the complete criminalization of deepfake child pornography, even when involving fictitious children. Secondly, it calls for legal ramifications for individuals involved in creating or facilitating harmful deepfakes knowingly. Additionally, it demands that software developers and distributors ensure their products do not produce detrimental deepfakes, with penalties for non-compliance.

Signatories include notable figures like United States politician and cryptocurrency advocate Andrew Yang, cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker, along with former presidents of Estonia, alongside hundreds of intellectuals from various nations such as the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and China.

Andrew Critch, an AI researcher at the University of California, Berkeley in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the lead author of the letter, emphasized, ‘Deepfakes pose a significant threat to society and are already causing widespread harm to individuals, communities, and democratic processes.‘

Critch and his colleagues crafted the letter to garner global support for legislative actions aimed at promptly curbing the deepfake menace.
