Firstly, the case was resolved to some extent at a press conference held at the Denpasar Police Headquarters on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. On May 1st, 2023, the bodies of Li Chiming (24), a male, and Cheng Jianan (22), a female, were discovered within the hotel. The grisly crime scene, which included the bodies of the murdered couple in a hotel room and a nearby hallway, fueled speculation that a homicide had occurred. Police finally declared the deaths to be a murder-suicide at the press conference.
According to NusaBali.com, Police Commissioner Bambang Yugo Pamungkas, head of the Denpasar Police Precinct, declared that Li Chiming strangled Cheng Jianan with a rope before drowning her in a bathtub and dealing her significant blows. After that, Li Chiming killed himself by slitting his throat and inflicting more self-inflicted wounds with a shattered beer bottle. Based on the investigation of the victims’ bodies conducted by the Forensic Laboratory of the Bali Provincial Police, Officer Bambang Yudo stated that the deaths were ruled a murder-suicide.

The couple traveled to Bali for five days for two reasons. 1. commemorate Li Chiming’s college graduation 2. Cheng Jianan‘s to complete a trade using crytocurrency. With 500 million dollars in cryptocurrency, Cheng was a huge, whale in the crypto world. It’s thought that the couples would frequently switch hotels in Southeast Asia in order to confuse any potential thieves who could be pursuing them.

Chiming was seen groaning for assistance while crawling down the hallway naked. A shattered beer bottle’s sharp, jagged edge was used to inflict 20 wounds on him, including one on his back. A New Theory About The Case
Although neatly withheld from Chinese officials, Bali authorities determined that the entire affair was a lover’s dispute turned murder/suicide despite the fact that the couple’s room had a balcony that was accessible from the outside and was unprotected by security cameras. Currently, the most widely accepted theory holds that there are five potential suspects and that the murderer (or murderers) entered through the balcony, tortured Li’s GF in front of him, dumped her body into a bathtub, filled it with water, cracked open a bottle of wine, and created the illusion that she had been strangled by her boyfriend.
They then proceeded to torture Li for several hours, via multiple shallow cuts, and castrate him until he gave up his crypto recovery phrase to access his money. They stayed and waited for Li to bleed out, then left once they thought he was dead. However, Li only pretended to be dead and using whatever strength he had left, crawled out of his room and into the corridor, groaning for help for the next 23 minutes.
Li’s groans were heard by another guest at the hotel, who alerted the hotel staff immediately. The hotel staff claimed they went to find a wheelchair because they assumed it was an elderly person who fell in the corridor. By the time they got to the scene, Li had succumbed to his injuries. The case is still ongoing as to who the killer(s) are. Many people speculate that multiple hotel employees were involved in the murder since they stand to gain thousands of dollars.
