Reddit’s Alexis Ohanian to Revolutionize TikTok US with Blockchain Technology
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has confirmed his involvement in Project Liberty’s bid to acquire TikTok’s US operations with the goal of bringing the platform onto a blockchain. Ohanian’s role was first revealed on March 3, with Frank McCourt, founder of Project Liberty, announcing Ohanian’s appointment as a strategic adviser focusing on social media.
“I’m officially now one of the people trying to buy TikTok US — and bring it onchain,” Ohanian stated on X (formerly Twitter) on March 3. He emphasized the importance of user and creator ownership, declaring, “Users should own their data. Creators should own their audience. Period.”
Project Liberty’s Vision for TikTok’s Future
Project Liberty is focused on using a decentralized social network protocol called Frequency. This protocol enables users to retain ownership of their personal data and is built on the Polkadot infrastructure. Ohanian believes that TikTok, which has revolutionized content creation, should be controlled by the creators themselves.
“TikTok has been a game-changer for creators, and its future should be built by them,” Ohanian said, underscoring his commitment to a fairer, more transparent TikTok built with blockchain technology.
Ohanian’s Blockchain Experience
Ohanian is no stranger to blockchain technology. In 2022, Reddit invested its excess cash reserves into Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Polygon (POL). Additionally, Reddit launched the Reddit Collectible Avatars project, a collection of Polygon-based NFTs that users could purchase for their profiles. Although NFT sales dropped alongside the crypto market, Ohanian’s ongoing interest in blockchain remains clear.
