Solana vs Ethereum- Solana Surpasses Ethereum for New Developers in 2024
Solana vs Ethereum– For the first time since 2016, the Solana ecosystem has surpassed Ethereum in the number of new developers joining its platform. This shift marks a significant change in the competitive landscape of blockchain ecosystems. However, despite Solana’s growth, Ethereum continues to lead globally in total developer activity. The data reveals a growing interest in blockchain development, with regions like Asia driving much of Solana’s new developer influx.
Solana Outpaces Ethereum in New Developer Growth
According to a report released on December 12 by Electric Capital, 7,625 new developers joined Solana this year, compared to 6,456 for Ethereum. This represents an impressive 83% increase in activity for Solana year-over-year. The report highlights how Solana’s developer community has been expanding rapidly, especially in Asia, making it a major player in the blockchain space.
Solana briefly surpassed Ethereum in several key metrics this year. On March 18, Solana network activity exceeded Ethereum’s during the surge of Solana-based memecoins, while on October 28, Solana outperformed Ethereum in daily network fee generation for a 24-hour period. These milestones showcase Solana’s growing popularity, especially in specific areas such as low-cost transactions and fast block times, which continue to draw developers and users alike.
Ethereum Maintains Global Leadership in Developer Activity
Despite Solana’s success in attracting new developers, Ethereum remains the number one ecosystem globally in total developer activity. Electric Capital’s data reveals that Ethereum still leads in overall developer presence across regions such as Asia, Europe, North America, Africa, and South America. With 6,244 active developers monthly, Ethereum retains a dominant position, even though this number has shrunk by 17% from last year.
In addition to its mainnet, Ethereum’s Layer-2 (L2) networks have seen a 64% increase in developer activity since 2021. Around 26% of all monthly crypto developers are now working on L2s or the mainnet, indicating strong growth and continued interest in scaling solutions for Ethereum. Eigenlayer, Ethereum’s primary restaking protocol, has also emerged as the fastest-growing ecosystem, with a remarkable 167% increase in monthly developers.
